The Omega-3 to Omega-6 Ratio: The Foundation of Coat Quality
Both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are essential — neither can be synthesised by the dog's body and both must come from food. But they are not interchangeable. Omega-6 fatty acids, primarily linoleic acid (LA) from chicken fat, sunflower oil, and grains, drive the inflammatory pathway. Omega-3 fatty acids — EPA and DHA from marine sources, or ALA from flaxseed — counter that pathway with anti-inflammatory signals. For healthy skin and coat function, the two must be in balance.
Most commercial dog foods in India have an omega-6 to omega-3 ratio exceeding 20:1, driven by the heavy use of grain and poultry fat as primary energy sources. Veterinary dermatology research consistently points to a target ratio closer to 5:1 to 10:1 for optimal skin barrier integrity and coat lustre. At ratios above 15:1, the inflammatory cascade dominates: skin becomes dry and flaky, the coat loses its gloss, shedding increases beyond seasonal norms, and dogs with any genetic predisposition to allergies begin showing symptoms. Correcting the ratio through a high-omega-3 formula or targeted marine oil supplementation typically produces visible coat improvement within eight to ten weeks.
Biotin and Zinc: The Micronutrient Pair No One Talks About
Biotin (vitamin B7) is the enzymatic co-factor for fatty acid synthesis. Without adequate biotin, a dog cannot effectively process the fatty acids it consumes — making biotin deficiency one of the underappreciated causes of poor coat condition even in dogs eating apparently good food. Biotin is found in organ meats (particularly liver), egg yolk, and legumes, but it is also destroyed by raw egg white, which contains avidin — a biotin-binding compound. Feeding raw eggs to dogs over long periods can paradoxically cause biotin deficiency; cooking neutralises avidin completely.
Zinc is arguably the most critical mineral for canine skin health. It is required for the proliferation of keratinocytes (the cells that form both skin and hair shafts), for the structural integrity of the skin barrier, and for wound healing. Zinc deficiency presents as crusting around the eyes, nose, and mouth; scaly skin patches; dull, brittle fur; and increased susceptibility to bacterial skin infections. Malamutes and Siberian Huskies carry a genetic variant that reduces zinc absorption — a condition called zinc-responsive dermatosis — but zinc insufficiency affects dogs of all breeds when their diet relies heavily on phytate-rich grains that inhibit mineral absorption. Animal-protein-forward diets naturally deliver zinc in a more bioavailable form than grain-based alternatives.
Causes of Dull Coat and Excessive Shedding
A dull coat — one that has lost its sheen, appears rough to the touch, or breaks easily — is almost always a nutritional signal before it is a medical one. The most common dietary causes, in rough order of prevalence, are: inadequate omega-3 intake, insufficient protein for keratin synthesis, low biotin availability, zinc insufficiency, and dehydration. Seasonal shedding is normal and breed-specific, but year-round excessive shedding, large bald patches, or fur that comes away in clumps warrants both dietary review and a veterinary examination to rule out hormonal disorders (hypothyroidism in particular is common in Labradors and Golden Retrievers in India).
Dogs fed low-protein, high-cereal diets often shed excessively because the body prioritises available protein for vital organs over hair shaft maintenance — hair follicles are non-essential from a survival standpoint and among the first structures to suffer when amino acid availability is tight. Switching to a food where chicken, salmon, or lamb appears as the primary ingredient typically reduces background shedding within four to six weeks, with full coat quality improvement apparent in ten to twelve weeks.
Why Salmon Oil Produces Visible Results
Salmon oil has become the standard recommendation in veterinary dermatology for a specific reason: it delivers EPA and DHA — the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids that act directly on inflammation — in a highly concentrated, immediately available form. Unlike ALA from flaxseed, which dogs convert to EPA and DHA at conversion rates below 5%, salmon oil bypasses the conversion bottleneck entirely.
The mechanism is multifaceted. EPA and DHA incorporate into the phospholipid membranes of skin cells, modifying their response to inflammatory signals from allergenic triggers, bacteria, and environmental irritants. They simultaneously upregulate ceramide synthesis — ceramides are the lipid molecules that seal the skin barrier and prevent transepidermal water loss. A well-sealed skin barrier means less bacterial penetration, less allergen uptake, and significantly reduced itch response. In clinical practice, dogs that are itchy, flaky, and malodorous (a common combination, because barrier-broken skin is colonised by Malassezia yeast) often show remarkable improvement on therapeutic omega-3 supplementation alone, before any shampoo or antibiotic is introduced.
Hydration and the Skin Barrier
Water is not a nutrient that appears on a label, but it is one of the most important variables in skin health. Chronic mild dehydration — common in dogs fed exclusively dry kibble without adequate water access, or in the extreme heat of Indian summers — reduces skin turgor, slows cell turnover in the epidermis, and reduces the viscosity of sebum, the natural oily coating that keeps the coat water-repellent and the skin supple. A rough, dry-feeling coat in an otherwise healthy dog is often the earliest sign of inadequate hydration.
Dogs on dry food should consume approximately 30–40ml of water per kilogram of body weight daily. In Indian summer temperatures above 35°C, this requirement increases significantly. Mixing a small quantity of warm water into dry kibble — or supplementing with a wet topper — meaningfully increases total water intake for dogs who are reluctant drinkers. This is especially relevant for Bulldogs, Pugs, and other brachycephalic breeds, which have higher respiratory water loss and are often poor drinkers by temperament.
